Theft of Fire Hydrants Leaves Residents Vulnerable

The City of Modesto is experiencing a rise in fire hydrant theft in the north east portion of the City. Citizens are encouraged to be vigilant and report suspicious activity in their neighborhoods and around fire hydrants by dialing 9-1-1. Only City crews and Fire personnel are authorized to unbolt, lift or transport fire hydrants. Fire hydrants provide a reliable source of water in the event of a fire – when fire hydrants are vandalized or stolen, residents and businesses alike are put in a vulnerable position.

City crews are working quickly to replace the stolen fire hydrants, but urge residents to keep their eyes and ears open and to report anything they feel is suspicious so that the Modesto Police Department can investigate; anyone with information related to these stolen fire hydrants is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 521-4636 – callers can remain anonymous. The City of Modesto Water Division also asks residents to report vandalized or stolen fire hydrant locations by calling 342-2246.
