Tennessee Football = Vols Plays Dirty, Loses To North Carolina Tar Heels

by Thomas J Andrews on December 30, 2010

The Music City Bowl featured the Tennessee Volunteers (Vols) and the University of North Carolina (UNC) Tar Heels. The game was played in Nashville, TN. It was essentially a home game for the Vols as about 80% of the fans were Vol’s fans. UNC was lead by quarterback TJ Yates and the Vols were lead by freshman Tyler Bray.

The game got interesting as it entered the 4th quarter. After a touchdown throw by Bray to Justin Hunter to put the Vols on top 20-17, the PAT was blocked thus making it a 3-point game. It was later tied by the Tar Heels with no time remaining. What set up the game-tying field goal for the Tar Heels were two crucial unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the young Vols team. This goes to show that the team is undisciplined and is just a dirty team overall. There were a total of 4 dirty plays in the last 40 seconds and overtime periods that the Vols committed, however only 3 of them were officially called on the field.

Freshman Tyler Bray threw an interception on the Vol’s 2nd overtime possession to seal the victory for the Tar Heels. Bray looked like he was crying on the sidelines when the Tar Heels lined up for the game-winning field goal. Numerous times, Bray should have been called for an unsportsmanlike conduct. After each of his touchdown throws, his celebration was one that drew attention, which is essentially a 15-yard penalty. However, the refs did not call anything. This goes to show the refs were bias and completely inept.

At the end, the best team won, the Tar Heels beat the Vols with the final score of 30-27. This was just another case showing that the SEC conference is highly overrated this year It also showed that the Tennessee Vols has a long way to go in order to make it to another BCS bowl game in the future.

tyler bray is dirty too. he should have been penalized for those dirty gestures. VOLS SUCK, THEY WILL ALWAYS SUCK! they played 16 freshmen this year? wtf? ya ain’t gonna win with playing that many.

the coaching for the vols was horrendous all season long. derek doolly is not the answer. lane kiffin was and he is now gone!!!! vols sucks!

  • jackaustiniii

yeah, ten-a-crap sucked this entire season. theyre a bunch of immature, dirty playing freshman athletes. i wonder if some of them paid for their own tattoos. ;)

  • Markwbeasley

If figures some air head out in the land of fruits and nuts would write a story like this….you know nothing about this group of players that i proudly call the “BIG ORANGE”….Oh I know you love Lane Kiffin and USC…..what bowl game did you go to this year???

  • Volssucks2011

they should be called, the big “suck” or the “DIRTY ORANGES” because they do both. lol.

  • Biteme

Are you freaking kidding with an “article” like this?

  • Tennessee BIGfoot

You really don’t know squat about college football….ANY program that plays 16 freshmen (TN had the 3rd most in the country this season)…is going to be a team to be dealt with for the next 3 years with all the talent that they have. Yes I’ll admit you don’t call 3 running plays with a minute and a half to go when you just need 1 first down and game is over….and by the way you may keep Kiffin, you know we have a sewer plant named in his honor here in Knoxville!!! GO VOLS!!!

  • Harris Pw

Sec over rated ? compared to who? the pac 10? Let’s have this discussion after the bowl games are played and we have statistical data, until then your opinions are only conjecture.

  • fan

Yes,Troy Smith, you are right on in your analysis!

  • Rosesharleybaby

This is only one persons opinion. The game was played well until the Tar Heels were given only a 5 yd penalty instead of a 15 yd penalty. To many players on the field and I don’t mean 12. They had about 5 extra players at the final play and the officials screwed up giving them only 5 yds. Officiating was horrible and took to many “reviews” which gave the Tar Heels a lot of extra time when they had used all their time outs.

  • Rosesharleybaby

Tar Heels wouldn’t be playing if it wasn’t for people crying that we need more bowl games.

  • Wooopig

Hey the SEC west is by far better than any other conference in America. You Arkansas going to the sugarbowl. Aurburn going to the national championship. Then you have former #1 Alabama. The LSU tigers another great team. And let’s not forget Mississippi State. Anyways the the point is this. Just watch the rest of the SEC bowl games. I think that Auburn is going to win the championship game. I also think that Ohio State having all the problems that’s going on with their players. Arkansas will probably win the Sugar bowl.

SEC west will smash on their opponents

  • Secinfo19

SEC overrated? How many football national championships in the past four years have come outside of the SEC? If the overrated “dirty” Big 10 officials actually knew the rules, there would have been no overtime.

  • Joe_Vol

It’s hilarious how delusional the author of this article is. Bray’s celebration isn’t unsportsmanlike conduct. I’m sure you’re saying that because of how the Kansas St. vs Syracuse game ended, but that was a horrible penalty.

Janzen Jackson’s hit wasn’t helmet to helmet and please tell me the last time you saw a hard hit where the defender didn’t leave his feet (aka “launch” himself)? The no-call where LaMarcus Thompson hit the RB after he was down was the correct no-call; he was shoved into him. The roughing the kicker penalty on the last play of the 4th quarter was absurd, again a UNC player shoved the Vol player into him. The facemask was a legit penalty, but that kind of stuff happens to every team.

Dooley made the correct call to run the ball on the Vols last series of the 4th quarter. An incomplete pass stops the clock and potentially gives UNC more time to get down the field. The play calling could have been a little more aggressive, but the Vols don’t have the best running game; in case you haven’t noticed.

There were several different things that could have changed the outcome of the game. If Lincoln would have just made the extra point you wouldn’t have written this clusterf**k of an article and I wouldn’t be sitting here defending the Big Orange.

On the play where J. Jackson was penalized for “launching” himself the call could have been overturned because it was pretty clear he didn’t have possession when he hit the ground, AND he was out of bounds when it does show him with possession of the ball.

Then on the second to last play of the 4th quarter UNC has too many men on the field, but somehow the spike is allowed? There were too many men on the field the moment the ball was snapped and it should have ended the game; the spike was irrelevant. Not only that but how is there not a rule that runs time off the clock when a penalty is called? In the NFL if the clock is under 10 seconds when the penalty occurs the game is ruled over. The referees even declared the game over, then by some miracle they reverse it. So UNC basically gets a free play to tie the game in the 4th.

Now, as far as the SEC being overrated…you’re still delusional haha. Tennessee fielded it’s youngest, and probably worst team in 25-30 years. They had no choice to start freshman because there were no upper classmen left on the team due to attrition. Yet they made it to a bowl game and should have beaten a more talented and more experienced Tar Heel squad. Talk all you want now about Tennessee sucking, but be ready to eat crow from 2012 on.

  • Dojohns

    your an idiot.

  • Jdixter

Hey douchebag….compare records going into the game. UT was 6-6 (3-5 conference) UNC was 7-5 and was .500 in conference play. Don’t give me any of that “SEC is better than ACC” crap. We all know that. Point is….the Vol’s are bottem dwellers and secretly cry everynight that Kiffen left them.

Go brush your damn TOOTH, throw another log in your cast iron stove and cuddle up with the daughter, niece and wife (all the same person) until SEC media day next August.

  • Jdixter

This isn’t NASCAR…the NCAA doesn’t make up rules as they go. (unless your name is Cam Newton) The rule is penelty is 5 yards. Period. End of discussion. Maybe they should have given an extra yard penalty to your guy that grabbed the UNC facemask inside the 10 yardline during OT. You know, just for being a moron. Or maybe taked on an extra 5 yards to your guy that led with the helmet when all he had to do was push him out of bounds….FOR THE WIN! You’re just stupid.

you are an idiot. a biased idiot to boot. Tn played their hearts out only to have the end of the game overturned and the helmet on the sidelines NOT overturned. The big 10 crew gave this game to NC

  • bigbadjohn

Well it’s obvious in just his freshman year, the young and talented Tyler Bray, is already a much better QB than TJ Yates has ever been or will ever be. The penalty against Jackson was clearly a bad call, because he led into the reciever with his shoulder not his helment. You could clearly see that on the replay, and also see that the ball was not in control of the reciever when he touched out of bounds. Two times the UNC players shoved a Vols player into their own players trying to get a personal foul, and they did succeed once. There were some terrible calls in this game on both side i will admit, but I think in the end everyone realized who the officials on the field and in the booth were more bias toward. Just look the clock started jittering on the 1 second mark, and it for sure took longer than one second to snap the ball and spike it. Then they give a personal foul out so that the tar heels can have the ball right up close to the end zone after the UNC player shoved the lineman into the kicker. Come on man face the facts you lost the real game and the refs handed it to you through some terrible calls and an overtime. SEC over rated? I don’t see the ACC in the championship game. The Tennessee Volunteers will bring home a National Championship Trophy in the near future, far before the North carolina tar heels will. In two years Tennessee will pack home a BCS title and a Hiesman Trophy. GO VOLS!!!!!

  • UNCrules

u must be blind. vols players played dirty for the entire game. that is what you get when you have 16 immature freshmen playing like there were rules.

vols= national champs? never in football again. maybe in equestrian. lol

Mark it down man in January 2013 the Tennessee Vols win it all. As for dirty playing UNC got away with some pretty cheap shots. just look at the end around the vols ran and the UNC d-lineman hit him head to head after his forward progress was stopped. It’s ok to admit defeat man, you got us in O.T. But we clearly won the game in regulation if the officials would have followed the rules.

  • Rclosz

AMEN JOE!!!! This article is so laughable I almost threw-up. Did whoever write this even watch the game? Oh, and I noticed the author didnt even sign their name to it, unless I have just overlooked it.
Anyhow, I am proud of the way our young team played, and just the mere fact that they made it to a bowl game is a true testament of how far they have come this season and I am looking forward to next season.
And I 100% agree with you about the 10 second rule NFL plays by. If college football added this rule to they way they play then TN wouldnt have lost to LSU either!!!

  • Sparky

The fact is that TN lost this game because 1. they played too conservatively during their last possession in regulation where 1 first down would have ended the game, 2. committing 3 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties at the end of reg/start of ot (loss of composure) and more could have been called, 3. giving up the big play to UNC when they were out of TOs and well out of FG range. Any one of which would have led to a different outcome.

Blame the officials, blame the weather, blame the color of the grass – the facts remain that the game was within their control and they blew it……

On the bright side, there is some obvious talent coming along and Coach Dooley has turned the tables on a program that’s been living in the past for years now. The only question is whether the irrational fan base will allow it. We’ll soon know.

Have to agree with Joe_Vol here. The original author either has an axe to grind or knows absolutely nothing about football at the little league, highschool, or college level. The Vols played a great game and by letter of law in college football should have actually won the game… as we will see in the coming months a rules change will prevent the offense in future games from creating a penalty that helps them by delaying the game and giving them a chance to win. What is so obvious to me is that the author of the Modesto piece above hates the Vols or doesn’t have the required knowledge of sports in general to be writting about sports at all, or he might have bothered to mention the fact that the Vols did actually win the game but were penalized because Carolina had too many players on the field…by the way, I live in North Carolina and don’t have an axe to grind. I just happen to think honest, clear reporting of the facts is more important than personal feelings…

  • Kylecolvett

The SEC will domi ate in the big games. When your conference sends ten teams to bowls, the weaker teams may struggle. Check every recent NC, every NFL draft. You know what you will find. Tennessee is in a very dark era, but the program will recover. Look at all time wins, all ti e bowls, all time Hall of Famers.

  • Jhoward343

I expect next year we will see “The North Carolina Rule”. That is, an offense can’t get an advantage from a penalty they commit on the last last play of the game or the half. Notice the author here doesn’t even mention this improbable situation that saved NC’s skin. NC were beaten and the game should have been over with an NC loss. To say that NC was lucky to win this game is an understatement. The NFL installed this rule years ago.just to prevent an undeserving team like NC to artificially win a game.

BTW, that highly overrated SEC just swept the Big 10′s best today. How many National Championships has the ACC won lately? The SEC has 5 in a row, going for 6. Has an ACC team ever played in this game?? It is amusing to see these fruitcakes write absolute hooey and reveal their lack of football knowledge. I’m sure many tarheels realize that they stole this game on a fluke. They’re just thanking their lucky stars they got such a big break.

This article is very biased but you may have overcame it with more bias. You’re mad about the too many men on the field but the refs made the right call according to NCAA rules, and if you think the UT player didn’t make an illegal hit on the UNC receiver you are delusional, and it wasn’t clear that he didn’t maintain possession. It was hard to tell therefore they couldn’t overturn the original call. Bray made motions to the UNC sidelines which is what would make it unsportsmanlike not just a celebration, and granted it probably shouldn’t be called, the other calls in NCAA games make it a justifiable penalty.
