SACRAMENTO ––Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, issued the following statement today in response to the passage of the 2013-14 Education Trailer Bill that changes the way California funds public schools:
“A bright spot in the budget is the adoption of Governor Brown’s Local Control Funding Formula for education, which helps students in our Central Valley. I’m pleased that the base level of funding increased by roughly $500 per pupil over the May Revise. This action will help all kids in all schools while still providing supplemental and concentration grants in recognition of the fact that additional challenges require additional funding and strategies to raise student achievement.
“It’s unfortunate that the full details of the accountability provisions will be completed later by the State Board of Education because that leaves districts in a state of uncertainty. Nevertheless, it is important to pass the reforms and the local control, which allows schools districts to determine the best use of funds for their unique districts. The goal now should be to hold schools accountable for the results while giving them maximum flexibility to achieve them.”
