Robert Moreno Arrested in O’Malley’s Bar Shooting

MODESTO, CA- Modesto Police made an arrest in a fatal shooting that occurred in the parking lot near O’Malley’s bar in North Modesto.

On Sunday, July 22nd, at about 1:38 A.M., Modesto Police Officers were called to O’Malley’s Bar, located at 2200 Standiford Avenue in northwest Modesto, for a report of a shooting.  When officers arrived, they located two shooting victims and a large crime scene in the parking lot of the O’Malley’s Bar. Both of the adult male shooting victims were transported to local hospitals, where one of the victims, 34-year-old Daryl Chargualaf of Modesto, succumbed to his injuries.  The second victim suffered from non-life threatening wounds and was later released from the hospital.

Robert Anthony Moreno, a 30-year-old resident of Hollister, remained at the scene and identified himself to the police as the shooter in this incident.  Moreno also identified himself as an off-duty Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Federal Police Officer for the U.S. Department of Defense.

Investigators learned Moreno and Chargualaf, who was also a DLA Federal Police Officer, were together, off-duty, at O’Malley’s Bar.  Sometime during the night, they became involved in a verbal confrontation with another group.  While outside in the parking lot, the altercation escalated and became physical between the two groups.  During the fight,Moreno armed himself with a gun and fired several times, striking Chargualaf and the other shooting victim.

Homicide investigators were able to develop information which led them to believe that Moreno was criminally culpable for the death of Chargualaf and the shooting of the surviving victim.  Based on the information, investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Moreno.

This morning, on October 5th, Modesto Police Homicide Investigators went to the city of Hollister.  Moreno was arrested without incident and returned to Modesto, where he was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail.  Morenofaces one count of Murder and one count of Attempted Murder.
