Modesto’s Maria Sanchez Fails to Qualify for U.S. Open Tennis 2012

Earlier today, Modesto’s Maria Sanchez had an opportunity of a lifetime. If she beat her opponent, the #18 ranked player in the tournament Kristyna Pliskova, she would have qualified for the US Open 2012 in New York that starts on Monday, August 27.

Sanchez struggled in the first set after falling behind early on. She eventually lost it, 6-3. In the second set, the match was set up to be a close one. Each player won their respective service points and the set had to go to extra play. However, at the end Pliskova proved to be the stronger athlete as she steamrolled Sanchez in the final set to qualify for the US Open 2012.

Kristyna Pliskova (CZE) defeats Maria Sanchez (USA) 6-3, 7-6 (4).
