The 3rd Annual Modesto Out of the Darkness Community Walk (OOTD) in Graceada Park will take place on Saturday, September 29 from 9:30am to 12:00pm. The event benefits benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
From their website, “In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 15 minutes, claiming more than 36,000 lives each year. It is estimated that an attempt is made every minute, with close to one million people attempting suicide annually. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. among adults 18-65, the second leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and individuals ages 65 and older account for 16 percent of all suicide deaths. This is a public health issue that does not discriminate by age, gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic status.”
After her son’s suicide, organizer Alice Quayle wanted to help others who have dealt with suicide in their families and prevent this type of tragic event from happening.
Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk! Please know that walk donations are accepted until December 31st 2012.
There will be prize drawing, music and refreshments. Please plan to bring a photo of your loved one to be placed on a memory wall at the walk.
