MODESTO, CALIFORNIA – The American Institute of Architects, Sierra Valley Chapter and the Modesto Art Museum announce the fifth annual Modesto International Architecture Festival, Saturday, September 15 to Sunday, September 23, 2011, http://modestoarchfest.com/. The festival has been expanded to nine full days of tours, movies, exhibits, talks, workshops, and events.
The festival opens on Saturday with exhibits and self-guided tours and continues through the following weekend. Events include a gala reception on Saturday evening; two Architecture Cafés, informal conversations over a cup of coffee; self-guided walking, driving, and bicycle tours of Modesto’s architecture; an evening of architecture movies at the State Theatre; Architecture Graffiti, an outdoor screening of movies projected on building walls; and an afternoon of fun free activities for families and kids.
New this year, is the Architecture Poetry Walk, a guided tour through downtown Modesto with poetry readings at each site. A local group of poets has organized an international poetry competition for the festival. Poets are invited to study online photos of Modesto buildings and to send poems based on these buildings. Ten poems will be selected and published in a chapbook and those poems will be read at their corresponding buildings. The walk is scheduled for Sunday, September 16. This is the first architecture poetry walk in the world. Also new this year is an all-day architecture fair with a variety of activities including exhibits, tours, booths, talks, and movies. The fair is scheduled for
Saturday, September 22.
All festival events are free for AIA or Modesto Art Museum members. Tickets for the movie night will be available at the door the night of the screening. Information about the festival can be found at: http://modestoarchfest.com/index.html
