Congressman Denham Honors 2013 U.S. Service Academy Appointees

(Modesto, CA) – U.S. Representative Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) today honored U.S. Service Academy appointees from California’s 10th Congressional District during a reception held at the Salida Library for the students who have been selected to attend one of the armed service academies.  Three graduating seniors nominated by Denham last year have been selected to attend the country’s leading service academies, including the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs and U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis

“These young students represent our state’s best, and I’m proud to nominate them to our nation’s military academies,” Rep. Denham stated. “It’s truly inspiring that so many young and talented Californians desire to serve our nation by joining the armed forces.  This dedicated group will surely lead our country to a brighter future, and I’m delighted we will have the opportunity to come together to celebrate their accomplishments.

Rep. Denham also recognized retiring Service Academy Board Members Capt. Rod Stubblefield, Cmd. David Linn, Lt. Col. Bob Small for their years of help with the academy nomination process.

To be considered for admission to the armed service academies, all potential students must be nominated by a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator or the Vice President. In January, Denham selected nominees after a rigorous application and interview process where factors such as academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, leadership skills, physical aptitude, character and motivation were taken into consideration.  Acceptance is then decided by each academy.  The honor of attending a service academy comes with a commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of 5 years active duty and 3 years reserve, an 8 year minimum, upon graduation.
