Citizen input is essential to the success of local government, as such, Citizen Advisory Groups, called boards, committees and commissions, are formed to assist the City Council in making critical policy decisions that impact the community. These groups research, study and discuss specific issues with both short and long-term implications, forwarding their recommendations to the Council. The following Boards, Commissions and Committees either currently have vacancies or will have vacancies: Planning Commission: The Planning Commission is responsible for formulating recommendations regarding the orderly development of the community as it relates to zoning and land use. This commission reviews and recommends amendments to the Modesto General Plan, Zoning and Modesto Municipal Codes, the Capital Improvement Program, and subdivisions and neighborhood development plans. Board of Zoning Adjustment: The responsibility of the Board of Zoning Adjustment is to uphold the integrity of zoning regulations and the Modesto General Plan. The board makes decisions on applications for conditional use permits, variances and office plot plans; and hears appeals concerning decisions made by the Community & Economic Development Department staff. Those interested in applying for a position on one of the citizen advisory groups may go online to www.modestogov.com and click on “Boards, Commission & Committees” under the Government tab at the top of the webpage; click on the advisory group you are interested in and fill out the online form.
